How to Prevent Your Phone from Turning Off Automatically
How to Prevent Your Phone from Turning Off Automatically
Few things are more annoying than your phone switching off by itself when you need it most. You’re in the middle of a call, checking a message, or maybe just scrolling through Facebook — and suddenly the screen goes black.
I’ve had this happen with two different phones. At first I thought it was the battery, but after some trial and error, I realized there are other reasons too. And most of them are fixable without spending money on a repair shop.
If your phone keeps shutting down on its own, try these simple steps before panicking. Also read: Best apps for students in Pakistan
1. Check Your Battery Health
The most common reason phones turn off randomly is a weak or dying battery. If your battery is old or swollen, it may not hold a stable charge.
Go to Settings > Battery and see what’s using your power. If your phone turns off even when the battery shows 20% or more, the battery might be the culprit.
On some Android phones, you can dial *#*#4636#*#* to access a hidden menu with battery info. If the health shows “poor,” it’s time to replace the battery.
2. Look for Overheating Issues
Phones these days have safety features. If the internal temperature gets too high, the phone shuts down automatically to protect itself.
This happens a lot in Pakistan during summer, especially if you keep your phone in direct sunlight or use it while charging. Also if you play heavy games for too long, your phone heats up.
Let the phone cool down for 10-15 minutes. Remove the case if you’re using one — cases trap heat.
3. Disable Automatic Restart Settings
Some Android phones have a hidden feature that restarts the phone automatically at certain times. It’s meant to keep the system fresh, but if you don’t know it’s on, it feels like your phone is dying on its own.
Go to Settings > System > Reset Options and look for “Auto restart” or “Scheduled power on/off”. Turn it off if it’s enabled.
I found this setting on my friend’s Samsung phone after he complained for weeks about random shutdowns. Turned it off and the problem disappeared.
4. Remove Problematic Apps
Sometimes a poorly coded app can crash your whole system. If the shutdowns started after you installed a specific app, try uninstalling it.
You can also boot your phone in Safe Mode to prevent it from turning of automatically:
· Press and hold the power button
· Tap and hold “Power off” until you see Safe Mode option
· Tap OK
If your phone works fine in Safe Mode, it’s likely a third-party app causing the trouble. Uninstall recent apps one by one until the problem stops.
5. Check Your Charger and Cable
I know this sounds strange, but a faulty charger or cable can damage the battery over time. If you’re using a cheap charger from a local shop, consider switching to the original one.
Also clean the charging port gently. Dust inside can cause loose connection and sudden shutdowns.
Final Thoughts
A phone that shuts down randomly is frustrating, but usually it’s not the end of the world. Most times it’s either the battery, an overheating issue, or a setting you didn’t know existed.
Try these steps and see which one works for you. If nothing helps, then it might be time to visit a repair shop — but at least now you’ve ruled out the simple stuff.
